Triebenkogel, the ski tour king of the Vordertriebental

Open
A ski tour that is well doable even in bad weather, but nevertheless in no case to be underestimated. The tour is also recommended for beginners with good condition.
The ski tour on the Triebenkogel leads first over forest roads, drag paths, clearings and meadows.

From the Braunkar the ascent takes place in open terrain. It is not difficult to make a good track in the coppiced terrain. Steeper areas and thus also hairpin bends can be easily avoided by good track setting. Smaller terrain pockets can contain drifting snow in and after windy weather.

If the skiing ability is rather small, you can shift the descent to the starting point on forest roads and flat meadows once you have reached the Braunkar.

More information

from the north

On the A9, the Pyhrnautobahn, take the Trieben exit. From there take the B114 in the direction of Judenburg to Hohentauern. After 6 km turn left into the Triebental. Meeting point parking lot Braun after about 2 km on the right side.

from the south

Via the S36, the Murtalschnellstraße to Judenburg, continue on the B 317 to the junction of the B114 in the direction of Liezen. Follow the road until Hohentauern (about 35 km). Drive 3 km in the direction of Trieben. On the right side turn into the Triebental. Meeting point parking lot Braun after about 2 km on the right side.

From the parking lot Braun in a southwesterly direction across the meadow to the edge of the forest. There you meet the forest road, which leads along the Arlingbach. Briefly follow the forest road to follow the marked summer path shortly after the 1st right-hand bend. The old path turns left into the forest. Follow the path, which soon becomes wider, crosses forest road, but follows the marked summer path in the direction of Geierkogel/Sonntagskogel. The marked path leads us through the forest and at about 1480m joins a wide and flat forest road.

Follow this to the right until the yellow signs of the AV marking lead us to the left of the forest road.

Our route leads us to a large, flat meadow where an old alpine hut, the Kälberhütte, invites you to take a rest. After the Kälberhütte we stay on the forest road for a short time, leave it to climb up on the left side over a not very steep blow. At the end of this passage we get back to our forest road.

The reason for this trail cut is an avalanche path in the area of the prominent left bend of the forest road. A steep gully from the Kreuzkogel often carries avalanche snow onto the forest road in this area.

Once back on the forest road, we continue either on the road or with small shortcuts briefly through sparse forest and across a clearing to the forest road at about 1600m. We follow the forest road towards Braunkar between Geierkogel and Triebenfeldkogel.

As soon as road embankment is good to climb, we leave the forest road to the left side in the direction of Triebenfeldkogel. Now the route is to search through sparse forest, in the cropped terrain. There are many possibilities. The last 200 meters of altitude to the summit are a bit steeper, in the coppiced terrain you save the hairpin bends if the track is good. Keeping slightly to the left, you reach the summit of the Triebenkogel in a large right turn over the NW ridge.

In the last 200 meters of altitude, you reach a wildlife protection area in the eastern part. This area should not be entered and simply make the track after it.

Descent as ascent until the forest road at 1340m. After that it is better to stay on the forest road until the meadow behind the Braun farm.

Stop at the Brodjäger inn at the turnoff on the B114 (legendary trout for refreshment after the ski tour).
This tour is NOT considered "accessible by train and bus" because there is no regular connection.
